Session 3 - "Giv'er"

What is Giv'er about?

Getting off the couch and going after what you want! Discovering opportunities and overcoming obstacles.

The story continues…
The man left the comfort zone and began making his way across the bridge which stretched for miles ahead of him. Although he knew his journey would be long, he felt good to be moving toward his dream. He kept moving forward, taking one step at a time until suddenly he felt the bridge shaking! A big scary beast ran up from behind him and said "I am Nasty What If. They sent me from the comfort zone to fetch you. They want you back." He then began shouting negative "what if" statements at the man, pushing him toward the comfort zone.

"What if you don't make it?"
"What if they laugh at you?"
"What if you fail?"

The man looked toward his dream, looked at the comfort zone, and didn't know what to do. Then he heard the eagle calling out "Believe in Yourself!"

The man counteracted with positive "what if" statements…

"What if I reach my dream?"
"What if it is better than I imagined?"
"What if I SUCCEED?"

With that, Nasty shrunk from all of the positive statements and the man continued moving forward toward his dream.

He met three more characters on the bridge; opportunity, change and perseverance. He learned the following lessons from them…

Opportunity - Opportunity is usually disguised as a problem or challenge. It quietly presents itself and you don't notice it unless you are ready, unless you are looking for it or at least open to different possibilities. You have to be in a certain frame of mind, before you will recognize opportunity. Otherwise it goes by unnoticed.

"Remember,' she replied," that I, opportunity will present myself whenever you are moving towards you're dream. Keep moving. Don't turn your back on me, take me by the hand."

Change - Change said, "I'm here to warn you, things are really different up ahead. Not comfortable like things were back there. You might not like it." The man learned with change he had a choice. He could fight it or embrace it. When we embrace change magical things can happen and it may lead to success.

Think of one small thing you could do differently today that will point you in a new direction, and have a positive effect on your life.

Can you think of anything YOU can change today?

Perseverance - …Percy for short, says "I work hard, always complete what I start and I always get to where I am going. It doesn't matter if there are obstacles in my way…I find my way around them. It doesn't matter if my load is heavy. I find the strength to carry it. I get to where I am going."

Perseverance is the drive that keeps you moving...going forward, one step at a time, to reach your goals.

Successful People

There are many famous and successful people from the Miramichi…entrepreneurs, athletes, writers, doctors,…These people envisioned where they were going, believed in themselves and recognized opportunity when it came along.

Humans have a tendency to "snub" those who are successful with the "who do they think they are" attitude instead of celebrating the achievements of others. Who do you think is successful? Look at what they've done and find your motivation and inspiration from their success.

There are many opportunities still waiting to be discovered.Take the goalie mask for example. Before it was developed, before someone had the idea, it was not an obvious opportunity. It stemmed from a problem - goalies were getting their faces cut-up and teeth knocked out from pucks. But no one could see the opportunity, only the problem - duh?!

From every problem there is a possibility. To us now, it is obvious. We can't imagine sending goalies out without their masks. Opportunities such as these still exist. All the ideas are not taken! Zippers, Velcro…these were amazing discoveries in their time. The person who invented Velcro was turned down by manufacturers when he first presented his idea. Now it is a common everyday item with many uses.

Five, ten or twenty years ago we'll look back on today, after another great idea and say "I can't believe we lived without that" - it was so obvious.

Look around you, find the obvious!

Go as far as you can see, and when you get there….

you will see farther.
