The Little Sou’ West
and the Nor’ West
The Little Southwest Miramichi River flows through the communities of Halcomb, Lyttleton and Sillikers
and joins the Northwest Miramichi River in Red Bank. The river continues east past Sunny Corner towards Eel
Ground and South Esk on the southern shore, to Newcastle where it joins with the Main Southwest Miramichi
River.
The area is popular for Atlantic Salmon and trout fishing and outfitters offer guided hunting and fishing
excursions. The Northwest Miramichi River offers a variety of terrain from meandering channels to fast moving
streams like the Big Sevogle. Many of the upper and middle stretches of the Little South West River are whitewater,
and the lower part of the river is much more commonly canoed and is a popular area for tubing.
Sunny Corner is the hub for surrounding communities providing service amenities such as a gas station,
Subway restaurant, high school, an active community arena, and a seasonal farmers market, to name a few.
Tradition, conservation and respect for nature are prevalent in this area of the Miramichi. The oldest fish
hatchery in Canada is located in South Esk providing valuable salmon research while working to enhance salmon
populations in the Miramichi watershed.
