This past June 2014, Autism Resources Miramichi (ARM) opened a used bookstore called the Book Nook at 139 Duke Street in Chatham. Currently they employ four individuals with disabilities, for 30 hours per week, but the shop is so successful they are in the process of expanding. Recently, they extended the hours they are open to the public and they are also hiring two more individuals with disabilities, as well as expanding the actual size of the bookstore.

“We want to support persons with disabilities to gain meaningful employment,” say Lila Barry and Debby MacGregor, Executive Directors of Autism Resources Miramichi Inc. “At this time we want to thank the public for their tremendous support through book donations and purchases. It is because of community generosity that ARM Book Nook is meeting success.”

Autism Resources Miramichi is providing a unique service to adults seeking employment. This is the first endeavour of this kind in the province of New Brunswick and ARM has been recognized and applauded by other non-profit organizations for the model they are currently using to achieve their goals.

“We believe in meaningful employment for persons with disabilities and moving individuals towards reduced poverty levels, social inclusion and self sufficiency and acceptance,” the Executive Directors say. “We would like to also extend an invitation to you to come and see our bookstore, meet our Sales Associates, and tour Autism Resources Miramichi as well.”
